Wigan and Leigh’s New Cultural Crusader

PUBLISHING boss Mark Ashley has been appointed as the new chair of Wigan and Leigh’s Cultural Partnership.

Formed in 1999 the partnership is made-up of representatives from public and private organisations committed to improving the lives of individuals and communities by increasing the accessibility of cultural resources and developing recreational facilities.

Mark, 53, managing director of Standish Media Services in Standish said he was delighted at being offered the post.

He added: “Our job is to encourage, advise, question and celebrate all aspects of cultural life in the borough.

“My colleagues on the partnership give up their time and considerable organisational energies and skills to improving the lives of our fellow citizens from Standish to Atherton, from Leigh to Orrell.

“Our discussions, deliberations and decisions focus on getting local people involved in more life-enhancing activities: whether it’s sport, music, drama, dance, play, poetry, art, crafts or heritage and history, we want to make participation and enjoyment easy, rewarding and fun.”

He takes over from the highly successful former chair Trevor Barton whose tenure saw the development of the spectacular Leigh Sports Village.

Christine Bryan from Wigan Play Association has been appointed vice-chair.

Mark, who lives in Standish with wife Sara, a GP, is a playing member at Wigan Rugby Union Club, where he turns out for the clubs veterans’ side. He also lists mountaineering, skiing, gardening, acting, reading and sailing as his hobbies. He has served on Wigan’s Economic Partnership for the last four years.

Rodney Hill, chief executive of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: “Mark’s business acumen and his appreciation of culture, heritage, art and sports will be a real benefit to the partnership. I know that Mark will bring passion and enthusiasm to the role, and his experience will be particularly useful as the Cultural Partnership will be working alongside those for the Environment, Economy and Housing.”
