Trust Receives Two Ticks for Welcoming Disabled Workers

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) has been awarded the ‘two ticks’ disability symbol by Jobcentre Plus in recognition of their welcome approach towards disabled workers.

The Trust was established five years ago from the former Leisure Services department of Wigan Council and currently employs a diverse workforce of around 800 people. Its broad range of services attracts a wide range of employees, from gym instructors to gardeners, librarians, park rangers, arts development workers and admin staff, to name a few. A number of volunteers are also employed across its services.

The disability symbol is given to employers who have agreed to meet five commitments regarding the recruitment, employment, retention and career development of disabled people. The symbol is used on all job advertisements and other documentation to make it clear to disabled people that job applications are welcome from them and that the organisation is positive about their abilities.

Additionally the symbol gives a commitment to current employees so that should they become disabled, they will have support to continue in their current job or an alternative one, retaining their valuable skills and experience.

Jobcentre Plus has worked alongside WLCT to ensure that human resources polices and practices enable the whole organisation to be able to deliver the commitments.

Rodney Hill, Chief Executive of the Trust commented: “The disability symbol reinforces the fact that Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust is an organisation which welcomes disabled

people and recognises that employing disabled people is a key factor in improving our overall business success. We currently employ people with a range of disabilities and wholeheartedly welcome job applications from disabled people across our services”.

The disability symbol can be recognised as a circular symbol, usually green or black with two ticks.

All WLCT recruitment advertisements can be viewed at www.wlct.org/jobs

A list of national and local symbol users is available from your Disability Employment Advisor (DEA) who you can contact through your local Jobcentre or Jobcentre Plus office.
