Wigan’s Over 50’s Forum has been working
very closely with local school pupils from Rose Bridge High and Ince CE
Primary on their latest intergenerational arts project – a celebratory
song and video for the borough.
Having gained a Bright Ideas grant of £2,000 from Age Concern in the New
Year, the Over 50’s Forum commissioned Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust
to support them in this project that would also explore issues around
Wigan’s heritage and legacy.
Throughout the spring, around 20 members of the Over 50’s Forum worked
with a similar number of Year 10 pupils from Rose Bridge High School.
Greg Patmore, from Bridge Creative, was engaged to deliver four
workshops where the participants could develop their song-writing skills
and brainstorm ideas. The lyrics for the song were then created and the
group had to learn them, create movement and rehearse in preparation for
being filmed by Peter Goodwin of Mirabilis Media.
The resulting piece is entitled “We All Have Dreams” and the project has
managed to break down barriers between older and younger people by using
the performing arts as a way of having fun and working together. “The
day we filmed the video up at Haigh Hall was a great laugh” claims Helen
Richmond who took part as one of the Forum members. “Even though it
started to rain, we all realised how we had to become professional
actors and get the job done in the small time we had”.
The song will be showcased at the WOW Festival in Mesnes Park on 3rd
August. Following that, members of the Over 50’s Forum will then share
the project in Angers as part of the 20th Anniversary celebrations of
Wigan’s twinning with the French town.
