WIGAN PREPARES FOR WHAT COULD BE LARGEST POP SHOW SINCE VERVE

Sunday July 6th could see record crowds attend Wigan Borough’s one day rock and pop extravaganza.

The Haigh Festival – now in its 7th year, is expecting more than the 7,000 live music lovers that attended the 2007 event. Making next Sunday’s event the largest single music event to be held in the Borough since May 1998 when Wigan’s own Verve played their ‘Homecoming’ gig at Haigh in front of 33,000 fans.

‘It will be a very busy and nervous week next week’, says festival organiser – Chris Wyatt. ‘It will all be worth while given how we expect to put on a great show’.

Preparing for such numbers has meant that Chris and his organising team from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Wigan Council and the Wigan Music Collective have worked around the clock. “It is a logistical challenge. We need to ensure that over 50 musicians are prepared. There are stage builders, sound and lighting technicians to organise. There needs to be catering and toilets brought to site. Parking and grounds management. And of critical importance is policing and crowd safety’, explains Chris.

For those attending the event, the advise of the organisers is:

• The Haigh Festival will take place in front of Haigh Hall. The event starts at 12.00 noon and will finish at 8.00pm. Admission is free.

• Parking is limited. The Haigh Stables Car Park will be closed to the public. Stewards will direct cars to overspill car parks on the day.

• Alcohol will not be permitted to be brought onto the park. Alcohol can be purchased within the festival compound to 18s and over.

The full line up for Haigh Festival 2008, funded by Wigan Borough Partnership is:

12.00 Noon Joyce
12.45pm Murmurs of Tension
1.30pm John Player Specials
2.15pm The Geoffs

3.45pm Laura White
4.30pm The Kicks
5.15pm Acrid Fear
6.00pm Filthy Souls

Chris said. ‘It should be a fantastic day – a great celebration of the talent that exists in the Borough and the surrounding areas. And we want everybody to have a great time but importantly, in a safe and secure environment’.
