Curtis Stigers will headline Wigan’s International Jazz Festival on
Friday (July 16) to mark 25 years of jazz in the town.
Throughout this week young and old have been enjoying a mix of evening
performances, seminars, lunchtime concerts and free town centre shows.
Top pianist Monty Alexander, the Stand Tracey Big Band, the Scottish
National Jazz Orchestra and the Big Chris Barber Band have already wowed
audiences at the Celebration Hall at Robin Park.
On Friday it’s the turn of the American jazz vocalist, songwriter,
guitarist and saxophonist widely known for his top ten hits “I Wonder
Why” and “You’re All That Matters To Me”.
Ian Darrington, festival organiser for the last quarter of a century,
said: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic week of jazz of the very
highest calibre.
“There has been a consistent high standard right across the board from
street performances to celebrity concerts . It’s been just incredible
and we still have some fantastic performers ready to take to the stage
in the next few days.”
For the last 24 years some of the world’s best jazz musicians including
Art Blakey, Maynard Ferguson, Horace Silver, Ray Brown, Diana Krall and
James Morrison have played at the renowned Wigan International Jazz
Festival.
Spanning a quarter of a century more than 7,500 jazz musicians have
performed 1,500 hours of live music, during 600 concerts for more than
100,000 guests.
Wigan’s 25th International Jazz Festival concludes on Saturday with The
Columbia Jazz Band and Drake University Jazz Ensemble.
