Atherleigh Councillor Susan Loudon is to
appear in the storyteller’s chair as part of Wigan Borough’s celebration
of the National Year of Reading.
The storytelling sessions are part of Wigan Borough’s biggest ever
reading campaign, organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust with
support from partners across Wigan Council.
Susan Loudon, recently appointed as cabinet champion for Children and
Young Peoples Services at Wigan Council, is the fourth person to take to
the chair and will be taking part in a reading session for children and
their families at Atherton Library on Wednesday 25th June at 10.00am.
For Councillor Loudon, this is a return to her roots as she previously
worked within Wigan Libraries a number of years ago and read stories to
children as part of her job. Previous celebrities storytellers have
included writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie, Hollyoaks actress Leah
Hackett and Leader of the Council Lord Peter Smith.
The reading chair has been specially commissioned as part of the
borough’s Year of Reading event calendar and was designed and built by
local artist Mark Mennell.
Storytelling is just part of the campaign which aims to get more people
across the borough reading regularly. Each month there will be a series
of different themed events for people to get involved in, ranging from
‘rhythm and rhyme’ to ‘screen reads’. The theme for June is ‘reading
escapes’.
Additionally, the campaign urges people from across the borough to join
their local library to gain free access to a wide range of services such
as free Internet access, book loans, reading groups and learning
opportunities. For more information visit www.wlct.org/libraries
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Executive Director Pete Gascoigne said
“There are currently around 100,000 library members across Wigan
Borough, which is about 1 in 3 people. As part of the National Year of
Reading we would like to see this figure dramatically increase so that
the people of Wigan and Leigh can reap the benefits of becoming a
library member. Reading is a great way to entertain, educate and
enthrall!”
