The grand Victorian Mesnes Park Wigan is to
play host once again to the multi cultural and multi coloured Wigan One
World (WOW) Festival on Sunday August 3rd.
Now in its sixth year, the event is according to organiser – Chris
Wyatt, ‘a full day celebration of diversity and a lot more besides’.
Previous WOW events and programmes have had an emphasis on international
artists. And although the 2008 festival will feature 35 different acts
from around the world, there will be a much stronger ‘Wigan Borough’
theme.
‘We want WOW 2008 to be - about the Borough for the Borough’, said
Chris. ‘Yes, there will be bands from Portugal and dancers from India,
but this year we want them to be performing side by side with musicians,
art groups and displays from all across Wigan Borough. We want the day
to be a showcase for the local community. With local organisations and
groups using this very popular and enjoyable day to tell people what
they do and how others can get involved’.
From almost humble beginnings, WOW has grown into one of the area’s
largest festivals attracting over 9,000 people and providing
opportunities for many of Wigan Borough’s minority groups to introduce
themselves to the Borough.
Khaled Amini – Vice Chair of Wigan and Leigh minority ethnic
representation group - World in Wigan said. ‘This is and has always been
a wonderful event. It’s fun and informative. WOW combines entertainment
and the community. It promotes an important message of integration and
community cohesion in a very colourful way. It’s proven to be a great
way of bringing people together’.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust are now inviting local organisations to
come and take part. Expressions of interest are invited from groups who
would like to have a community stall within the park as part of WOW
2008. Stalls must have a genuine community theme or value and there will
be no concessions for trading.
Interested organisations are invited to contact Sharon Saunders - Parks
and Countryside Activities Manager on 01942 488598. The deadline for
expressions of interests is Friday 4th July 2008.
