Organisers of Wigan’s annual rock and pop
pilgrimage have this week announced who will be taking to the Haigh
Festival Stage.
The live music showcase includes some of Wigan Borough’s and the
surrounding area’s emerging and top musical talent.
Kick starting the Haigh 2008 Music Festival taking place on Sunday July
6th is Joyce with their set of uplifting electro - indie anthems. They
will be followed by the psychedelic – Murmurs of Tension and then the
Wigan and St Helens based quartet of The John Player Specials.
‘It gets harder and harder to select the bands’. Says event organiser
for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust – Chris Wyatt. ‘The real challenge
when selecting the bands, was to provide a balance of the fresh and the
established’.
‘This is a festival that celebrates past, current and the potential in
the local music scene. We want it to be inspirational as well as
entertaining. It’s a homage to many genres and styles, all sharing the
same stage.’
Chris continued. ‘We are confident that the line up now agreed upon
offers something for every taste and ear. I am sure that whether you are
a performer or a crowd member, you will enjoy the day’.
Indie band - The Geoffs are next up on the open air stage and then it’s
the turn of hard rock band, Ideal Crash.
Wigan’s much talked about singer Laura White will break up the rock n’
roll with her warm, smooth and sultry jazz and soul. Youngsters – The
Kicks are said to be the next big thing and they will be performing
modern guitar pop numbers.
The event enters into the early evening with offerings from melodic
metal band – Acrid Fear, Manchester based Filthy Souls and The Loungs.
And then closing the day is Wigan’s hugely popular Moco.
Moco Guitarist Anthony Rigby believes that the strength of this year’s
line up will make the day the biggest Haigh Fest’ to date. ‘Some of the
bands playing Haigh are my favourites and I’m sure they will attract big
crowds. We played the event two years ago and it was fantastic. I can’t
wait for the day to come round and seeing these bands on the big stage’.
Over 7,000 people attended the Haigh Music Festival in 2007. ‘And with
good weather we could easily get 9,000 to the event this year’. Says
Chris Wyatt. ‘And what a great platform this is for local bands. We
realise that there will be bands who applied and who may be disappointed
that they have not been selected. But we are working on other events and
opportunities for local bands to perform such as the WOW festival. The
demand shown by local musicians is testimony to how vibrant the Wigan
Music Scene is’.
The Haigh Music Festival was first held in 2002. The event is organised
by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Wigan Council and the Wigan Music
Collective. The event is funded by Wigan Borough Partnership.
The live music stage in front of the hall will open at 12.00 noon and
admission to the Hall grounds is free. For more information visit the
