Intriguing Authors Coming to Crime Scene
Near You
Wigan Borough residents will get a unique
opportunity this month to delve into the world of crime fiction by
meeting a series of leading crime writers.
As part of the National Year of Reading events, three ‘crime scenes’ are
planned throughout June, which has the theme of ‘reading escapes’.
The first of these events, Secrets of Crime Writing, takes place on
Thursday 12th June, where popular crime writers Rebecca Tope, Priscilla
Masters and Iain McDowall, give details on how they write their plots
and offer attendees the opportunity to quiz them on their characters and
writing skills. Sessions take place at both Wigan and Tyldesley
Libraries (12 noon and 3pm respectively).
Alan Hayhurst, True Crime Writer, will visit Hindley and Standish
Libraries on Friday 20th June (2.00pm and 6.30pm respectively) to talk
about Scotland Yard’s Black Museum, the famed collection of crime
memorabilia, detailing the events behind the evidence.
Top-selling Mancunian crime writer Chris Simms, author of ‘Shifting
Skin’, will visit Leigh and Shevington Libraries (2.00pm and 6.00pm) on
Wednesday 25th June to talk about how he formulates his plots and to
detail how a scene unfolds.
Julie Milner, Stock Officer for Wigan Library Service, commented: “We
are delighted to have such high-profile crime authors visit us in Wigan
to teach us about their skills. Crime novels are the most popular books
taken out by library members across Wigan Borough. The series of events
has something to offer to the budding author and the avid crime reader
alike, they also add an interesting twist to our National Year of
Reading events calendar.”
Tickets to the crime events are £1 each and are available from the host
libraries. Places are limited, so people are advised to book early.
The National Year of Reading campaign urges people from across the
borough to join their local library to gain free access to a wide range
of services such as free Internet access, book loans, reading groups and
learning opportunities. For more information visit
