St Philips signs up at Atherton Library
Photo Opportunity: Photographers are invited to attend either of the
following sessions: Wednesday 21 May (from 9am-12 noon) or Thursday 22
May (from 9am-4.00pm).
As it will take some time to get all of the children on to the
photograph, please advise Georgina Bentley on 01942 486930 what time you
will be there, so that arrangements can be made with the school.
Pupils from St Philips Primary School (on Bolton Road, Atherton) got
more than they bargained for when they decided to take part in a new
initiative with Wigan Libraries.
The whole of the school, of approximately 350 children, have signed
themselves up as library members at nearby Atherton Library.
The project, lead by Children’s and Youth Services Officer, Rita Devlin,
forms part of the National Year of Reading activities to promote book
reading for learning and for fun. Library Officers will visit the school
in a series of sessions to teach the children about how to use the
facilities at their local library and how to access online services
which they can then use with their parents at home.
Rita commented: “We are delighted to be working with the pupils and
teachers at St Philips to let them know about the full range of services
that are available to them. As part of the National Year of Reading we
are getting out into local communities and are letting people know about
what libraries have to offer”.
This is only the second time that an entire school has joined one of
Wigan’s Libraries, the first being Platt Bridge Community School in
2007, which is adjoined to Platt Bridge Community Library.
Additionally, the National Year of Reading campaign urges people from
across the borough to join their local library to gain free access to a
wide range of services such as free Internet access, book loans, reading
groups and learning opportunities. For more information visit
