VISITORS to Leigh Library
are being asked to step in front of the camera as part of a unique
photographic journal documenting day-to-day life.
Amateur photographer Jim Marsden from Leigh will be spending the next
few months capturing people’s portraits and their stories in a bid to
find out just what makes the library the social hub of the town centre.
Eventually, Jim is hoping to compile a book which he hopes will show how
important libraries are to the people they serve.
The 31-year-old design manager said: “I believe the library is a social
hub for the people of Leigh and I want to highlight this.
“Shortly after starting this project and talking to local people, it was
very clear that the library is still an important place for people to
visit, meet other people and friends and for many people it is a big
part of their everyday lives.
“Over the coming months I am going to photograph and ask for a few words
from users of the library who are happy to let me take their pictures
and have a chat about what the library means to them.”
During the project Jim will be keeping a blog about his work.
Jim added: “The end of this project will see the publication of a book
containing all the photographs and stories taken, and possibly an
exhibition of the images.”
The project has been given full support by Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust who manage libraries on behalf of Wigan Council.
Alison Eaton, Leigh Library Manager said: “This is a fascinating project
capturing the day-to-day life of a library with all the wonderful people
that we meet everyday.
“It’s also an amazing opportunity to show that libraries aren’t just
places people come to borrow books. In recent years they have
transformed, offering something for everyone whether you’re ninety or
nine. From story time to surfing the superhighway for jobs, libraries
have a cross generational appeal.”
