Evolving Landscapes at the Turnpike Gallery

The Turnpike Gallery has invited four of the UK’s most promising and talented contemporary artists to exhibit the results of their personal explorations into the evolving subject of landscape.

The gallery’s latest exhibition ‘Topographica’, featuring Kate Atkin, Layla Curtis, Tania Kovats and Peter Macdonald’s stunning work, runs from Saturday 19th January through to Saturday 1st March.

The exhibition takes its name from topography: the study of the natural and artificial physical features of an area. Visitors to this exhibition can expect to see drawings made using global satellite positioning technology (GPS); collages that re-define familiar maps; as well as traditional draughtsmanship and landscape subjects.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Gallery Co-ordinator Louise Clennell said: “This is an inspiring and thoughtful exhibition that brings together some great talent from across the country. Each artist has taken the idea of landscape in a state of change as their starting point. Through the medium of drawing, each of the artists articulates their own experiences and understanding of the landscape.

“Ranging in scale, from the vast to the intimate, all of the drawings are beautifully executed. We hope Topographica poses some interesting questions and ideas for those who are lucky enough to see it. We welcome visitors of all ages to enjoy this work and get involved in the accompanying workshops and activities.”

Each of the four artists that feature has built impressive reputations within the art world:

Kate Atkin was recently featured in Art Review’s list of twenty five artists to watch out for in 2007. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2005 and had a solo show at Museum 52 in London last year. This year she will also take part in group shows in Berlin and New York.

Layla Curtis recently worked with the London Transport Company, who gave away 25,000 limited edition posters of her work to passengers at central London tube stations as part of its Art on the Underground programme. In 2005, Curtis travelled to Antarctica with the British Antarctic Survey as part of its International Fellowship Programme. Some of the work she produced there will be shown in Topographica.

Tania Kovats is an established artist based in London. Since completing a masters at the Royal College of Art in 1990, she has exhibited extensively in national and international exhibitions, edited a comprehensive book on the subject of drawing and, most recently, she established the Museum of the White Horse. This is a touring ‘museum’ housed in a converted horsebox that offers the artist’s interpretation of the famous Uffington White Horse in Oxfordshire.

Peter Macdonald is an emerging artist based in London. He studied at the University of Newcastle and was a winner in the 2005 Jerwood Drawing Prize. His work is held in international collections and he is currently exhibiting work in his first solo show in London.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 19th January and runs through to Saturday 1st March. For further information about ‘Topographica’ and the accompanying activities programme contact the gallery on 01942 404469 or via turnpike@wlct.org
