Champions Bar Queen Strikes Gold for Christies

Loyal and valued employee of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Mary Lee, known best as the lynchpin of the Champions Bar at Robin Park Sports Centre, joined the fight towards a future without cancer by organising a fun day in aid of Christie Hospital in Manchester.

The fundraising extravaganza took place on Sunday 8th July at Robin Park Sports Centre and raised an impressive £5034. Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s staff joined Mary’s family and hundreds of friends for a ten hour party to raise the funds.

The day’s events included an auction and raffle, with a range of fantastic prizes donated in support of Mary’s appeal, as well as side stalls from face painting to golf putting. The evening ended on a high thanks to live entertainment and a disco.

Mary Lee who has been part of the Leisure team for years said: “After finding myself in need of treatment at Christie’s recently, one of my first thoughts was – what can I do to help such a worthy cause? And so, the idea of a fundraiser came about.

“The staff at Christie’s work so hard and it is very rewarding to be able to give something back. I would like to thank everyone – family, friends and colleagues for giving up their time and making donations of gifts and money. Without them the day wouldn’t have been such a fantastic success.”

Rodney Hill, Chief Executive of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, had nothing but praise for Mary: “Everyone at the Trust is extremely proud of Mary. Her selflessness and drive to make a difference is particularly inspiring. Mary’s fun day has raised an admirable amount of money that will help many people in their fight against cancer and I am humbled to have someone representing Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust in such a significant way.”

Christie Hospital is one of the leading cancer centres in Europe offering high-quality diagnosis, treatment and care for cancer patients as well as world class research and education in all aspects of cancer.
