Bikes To Botswana - Wigan Pool Promotes Pedal Power

You can always relay on big-hearted staff at Wigan Pool to dive in to help a worthy cause. And it was no exception when the taxman came calling.
The Inland Revenue has chosen to support the Books for Botswana charity, which aims to provide as much financial aid as possible for the stricken central African state.
And what better way to help than to get on your bike and do it yourself? Which is exactly what the Inland Revenue team did with a breath-taking sponsored cycle.

Workout wonders: Wigan International Pool fitness expert Martin Smith takes the Inland Revenue team through their paces.

Event organiser Christina King from the Inland Revenue is a big fan of the pool's fitness facilities, so she hit upon the brainwave of using the latest keep fit craze - Aerobiking - to help give their charity appeal a boost.
And if there's one place in Wigan to go to find out all about the best in fitness training it's Wigan Pool.
Christina said: "We’ve been to the aerobiking sessions at the pool before and they're really good. We are trying to raise enough money to pay for a day care worker to help out with young children in Botswana. In total we are hoping to raise £2,000 through a series of events."

Christina approached Wigan Pool fitness instructor and resident aerobiking trainer Martin Smith who was only too happy to lead her and the group through a gruelling sponsored workout, which helped them to reach their goal. Wigan Pool manager Stephen Colclough said: "This was a great event and we were only too happy to help out. The team from the Inland Revenue certainly gave it their all and Martin pushed them all the way."
He added: "We wish them the best of luck with the rest of their fund raising exploits."

Botswana Briefing:

  • Books for Botswana aims to relieve poverty, sickness and distress in Botswana by providing clothing for children. It also aims to advance education in Botswana by providing teaching materials and funds to pay for day care leaders.
  • Although Botswana is one of the more well off countries in Africa it has one of the highest rates of AIDS. This has resulted in huge numbers of orphaned children with no family to care for them. There are already more than 40,000 AIDS orphans registered in Botswana and the numbers are rising daily.
