for FREE* IMPORTANT NOTICE:
We are pleased to announce that Wigan Council and Ashton, Leigh and
Wigan NHS have agreed to continue the Universal Free Swimming scheme
until 30 September 2010.
Wigan Council and Ashton, Leigh and Wigan NHS are considering a number
of options regarding the future of the scheme. We will provide you with
further update as soon as possible.
Please note - customers applying for an upgraded Lifestyle membership
will only have a guarantee of Free Swimming until 30 September 2010.
16s and under and
the over 60s have been enjoying free swimming for a number of years. Due
to its success, free swimming will be open for everyone!
How do I register for free swimming?
*To benefit from free swimming you will be required to become a
lifestyle member which costs just £1.50 per year. As well as free
swimming you will be entitled to a number of other discounts. Click on
the 'Lifestyle Home' button above for more details.
I already have a free lifestyle card, what do I need to do?
Take your card to your nearest leisure centre or pool and pay £1.50 to
upgrade. If you have already paid to upgrade within the last 12 months
you do not need to do anything. All customers who have a basic card will
need to upgrade and will have to pay the £1.50 to entitle you to swim
for free.
I’ve previously had a lifestyle card but lost it. What should I do?
Take proof of identification to your nearest leisure centre or pool,
purchase a new card (£1.50) and pay £1.50 to upgrade. Please do not
complete a new form. If you have already paid £1.50 to upgrade in the
past 12 months then you will only have to pay £1.50 for a replacement
card.
I’ve never had a lifestyle card. Do
I still qualify?
Complete a lifestyle application form (available to download or pick up
a form from your nearest leisure centre, take it to reception with proof
of identification and pay £1.50).

What activities come under free swimming?
There are a variety of activities that come under the free swimming
banner. These include:
- Adult Swimming – for swimmers age
16+
- Aqua Natal classes – Organised by
a midwife team, designed to provide gentle and relaxing exercise to
music
- Casual Swimming – For all ages.
Under 7’s must be accompanied by an adult.
- Disability sessions – A swim
session dedicated to anyone with a disability providing a safer and
maintained environment.
- Family Swimming – An ideal
opportunity to bring along the whole family to a fun filled session.
- Early Birds – This session is for
all early risers who want to start the day with some exercise.
- Ladies only / Men only – As the
name suggests, these sessions are dedicated to ladies or men and are
proving to be a very popular session. We allow 14-16 year olds if
accompanied by an adult.
- Parent & Toddler & Swim Tots -
These sessions are ideal to introduce your children to water in a
safe and controlled environment.
- Swimfit – Provides a dedicated
lane swimming session for adults of all abilities. These sessions
are very sociable and an enjoyable way to keep fit.
- Fun 'n' Floats & Wet and Wild –
These highly popular sessions allow youngsters to burn off some
energy in a fun filled and controlled environment.
- Ice Adventure Inflatable – New
for Leigh Indoor Sports Centre. An inflatable with a difference.
Guaranteed fun and fitness for kids.

School Holidays
During school holidays please call into your local WLCT pool for a
separate timetable or visit the Active Life pages and select the leisure
centre or pool you wish to visit.
PLEASE NOTE: there is restricted access to Free Swimming during
school hours (9.00am- 15.30pm) in non-school holiday periods unless they
are legitimately absent from school. School swimming sessions do not
form part of the free swimming offer, a school swimming programme does
operate across all Active Life pools, if you require more information on

Can’t swim?
It’s never too late to learn, classes are available for all ages.
Adult Lessons – All Aqualife pools offer instruction for adults, from
non-swimmers to more able. From these lessons adults are able to
progress into other aquatic disciplines.
Children’s Lessons – All Aqualife pools offer and extensive range of
children’s lessons with the National Plan for Teaching Swimming. They
start at level 1 with the basics and work through to level 7 to become a
competent and safe swimmer.
