Looking
for a seasonal challenge? Why not try our Christmas
micro-fiction text competition? And what is
micro-fiction? Well, Ernest Hemingway once wrote a 6-word story
and is said to have considered it his best work: “For sale:
baby shoes, never worn.”We are being rather more generous, however! To celebrate the end of National Year of Reading, Wigan Libraries are asking for your stories on the theme of “Christmas Future”. The prize for the best, and most original, entry will be £50 worth of High Street vouchers! |

Donkeys, Sandals and Nothing but SandMeet the man who was at a 'boring New Year's Eve party' one year, and decided to undertake the daunting task of crossing the entire vast continent of Africa solo. Fran Sandham's quest included company from a stubborn donkey who refused to move for months, all of which is documented in his novel, Traversa. Fran will be talking about this epic journey as he visits two of the borough's libraries as part of National Year of Reading 2008. |

Our Borough, Our ResponsibilityBiological diversity (or Biodiversity for short) has taken millions of years to establish and is still changing. It is essential to the Earth’s life support system, providing basic natural processes, which we take for granted, such as fossil fuels, fresh water, fertile soil, clean air, a stable climate and predictable weather conditions. Our borough has its own very distinctive ‘wildlife’ communities, which over time, have adapted to our local conditions and now form the basis of our 'local biodiversity'. |
