Outreach & Community
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has a
strong commitment to increasing access and participation in the visual
arts and crafts for local people. The Turnpike Gallery initiates a
variety of projects throughout the year, ranging from one-off practical
workshops led by artists, to longer term projects in the community and
exhibitions across the borough.
Practical workshops take place at the Turnpike Gallery and at other
locations providing hands-on experience in a variety of media for
members of the public. Key events are programmed during the year to link
with
Museums and Galleries Month, the
Big Draw and
Festival Fever.
Working in partnership with other departments and agencies, projects are
also set up for particular groups, such as young people or people with
disabilities. Work with host organisations such as libraries, schools,
community groups and the Primary Care Trust, has also developed work
opportunities for local artists and participation by the community.
The Turnpike Gallery is keen to develop new audiences for the visual
arts.
The Stairs Gallery and Derby Room at the Turnpike Centre
complement the main Gallery as venues for professionals and amateurs to
show work to a wide audience.
Wigan Artists Network and
OK
Studios in Standish are active across the borough, providing
professional development and a regular meeting point for artists, as
well as public exhibitions and events.
