Introduction
Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust has undertaken an Audit of Arts Venue
provision in the Borough to create a picture of what venues and resources
there are in Wigan, their current usage and condition. It was also felt to
be a priority to implement an access audit of the facilities from both an
audience and artists' perspective. The work of the
project is still ongoing and if you have any comments regarding Arts
venues in the Borough, or personal experiences to share, whether as
audience, artist, hirer or user, please contact the
Arts Development officer.
Survey of
venue use by local Arts groups
A questionnaire was
sent out to 67 community-based Arts groups and 34 replies were received.
The questions sought to discover which venues local groups used for public
performances and whether or not the venues were adequate for their needs.
It also asked which features the groups would like to see in an 'ideal'
venue.
Physical
survey of selected Arts venues
Consultants visited 10
venues in the Borough including all the leisure halls run by Wigan Leisure
and Culture Trust plus venues run by the voluntary sector. The venues were
assessed firstly in terms of 'attitudinal access' - concerning how people
dealt with access requirements and what policies and training were in
place. The buildings were then examined in terms of physical access and
provision for people with a range of disabilities.
