Pies, Piers and Pilgrim Father Tours are walking tours (fully wheel
chair and guide dog accessible). Some tours are guided using qualified
Blue Badge Guides and trained Countryside Rangers while others are self
guided.
Pies, Piers and Pilgrim Father Tours take place throughout the year and

Wigan Town Centre
Magical History Tour
Tour time: 2 hours
Adults £4.50

Start at Wigan History Shop; the old Wigan Reference Library and the
place where George Orwell researched his book – The Road to Wigan Pier.
Move on and learn of Wigan’s roman fore fathers, of Cromwellian links
and a proud industrial past. Learn of famous sons and daughters. Visit
the site of Wigan Casino – the spiritual home of Northern Soul and
discover the connection between Wigan Parish Church and old style
telephone boxes.

Haigh Hall Tours
Tour time: 2 hour 30 minutes
Adults £4.50 and includes refreshments.

Take a history tour of the magnificent Georgian hall and surrounding
parklands and plantations. Learn the legend of Lady Mabel and the
exploits of the Lords and Earls that once lived here. Hear of ghosts and
famous visitors. Discover Haigh’s industrious past and inventive
building. Walk through the Walled Gardens. Visit the Stocks and Lily
Pond.
Historic Standish
Tour time: 2 hours

Standish – a small township 5 miles north of Wigan Town Centre and once
the home of Myles Standish, one of the original Pilgrim Fathers who in
1620, set sail on the Mayflower to colonise America.
Visit St Wilfrid’s Parish Church - Lancashire’s only grade I listed
church. See the ancient stocks, the Market Cross and the Dipping Well
that stands outside. Learn of the English Civil War Battle of Wigan Lane
and hear the story of the Cat I’th Window.
Wigan Pier
and Heritage Walk
Tour time: 2 hours

Begin in the Courtyard of Wigan Pier. Find out how this group of
warehouses became famous around the world. Walk to the real Wigan Pier
and learn of the two Georges synonymous with Wigan Pier. That’s George
Orwell and George Formby Snr. Next, walk along the towpath of the Leeds
– Liverpool Canal and discover a Wigan ‘Flash’ and Wigan’s industrial
heritage on your way to the first of Wigan’s famous flight of 23 locks.
Leeds – Liverpool Canal Walks
There are a series of three self guided walks taking in the Leeds –
Liverpool Canal and its industrial and natural heritage. All three walks
begin at Wigan Pier and extend to Appley Bridge (via the Douglas
Valley); Leigh Bridge and Haigh Hall.
A guided tour of the canal is available starting at Crooke Village and
taking in the Douglas Valley. This tour and walk takes 2 hours. Adults
£4.00. Discounts for groups of 15 or more.
Please note that although the walks are accessible to those people with
guide dogs and using wheel chairs, the towpaths are uneven in many
places and difficult during poor weather conditions. Contact Wigan
Tourist Information for advice.
Real Ale and Brewery Tour
Tour time: 3 hours 30 minutes
Adults only £10

Visit a few of
Wigan Town Centre’s traditional local hostelries. Experience real ale
and real characters. Sample a Young Pretender or a pint of Bright Blade
or Napoleon’s Retreat. En route, pop into the award winning Allgates
micro Brewery. Housed in an original brew-house and now sympathetically
restored.
Included is a tour of Allgates Brewery and sampling session in the
brewery bar. Drinks in the pubs visited are not included in the price.

qualified and experienced Blue Badge Guide or Wigan Countryside Ranger.
Unguided Tours: These tours are self-guided. Trail leaflets are
