Wigan Borough Sports Awards

2007

The Sporting Community came together on Friday 25th January 2008 to celebrate and highlight the Borough’s finest performers, coaches, volunteers and clubs. The night, which was hosted by Wigan Sports Development Team, incorporated a Beijing theme to the evening to celebrate the forthcoming Beijing Olympic Games later this year. Over 270 guests attended to enjoy the evening and celebrate the 114 nominations that were submitted to the Wigan and Leigh Coach and Volunteer Development Group for judging.

Guest Speaker, Marc Woods took the audience on an inspirational journey through his diagnosis of cancer as a teenager to winning a gold medal at the Paralympic Games. The Borough’s winners went onto the Greater Manchester Sports Awards on Friday 11th April with the hope and aspiration of being crowned Greater Manchester winner. The winners were as follows:

  • Sports Achiever of the Year: Daniel Greaves – City of Liverpool Trampoline Club
  • Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year: Daniel Dawoud – Hindley 6-ers Cricket Team
  • Volunteer in Sport of the Year: Martin Buckley – Westleigh Basketball Club
  • Coach of the Year: Lee Glynn – Winstanley Warriors Junior Football club
  • Clubs of the Year: Westleigh Basketball Club
  • Unsung Hero in Sports Award: Jo Riches – Tyldesley Rugby Union Football Club

Rob Young, North West Co-ordinator for the 2012 Games closed the evening with an speech to inspire the Borough to ‘Get Set for Wigan 2012’.
