Wigan Borough Sports Awards

WIGAN and Leigh’s unsung heroes of sport were duly honoured at this year’s annual Borough Sports Awards.

Coaches, teams and sports clubs gathered at the JJB Stadium on Friday 6th February for the ninth annual award ceremony. Special guest speaker was 400m runner and silver medallist at the 4x400m relay in the Atlanta games Mark Richardson.

He said: “These winners tonight are an inspiration. When I first started out I went to a local club and said ‘I want to win an Olympic medal’ and the coach there just looked at me and said ‘that’s a worthy ambition let’s see what we can do’. “Winning silver in Atlanta was a wonderful feeling and it all started for me at local level. It’s the feeder system to national and international success. Everyone’s success starts here at grass roots.”

The annual ceremony, organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's (WLCT) Sports Development Unit, recognises the hard work and dedication put in by competitors, coaches and sports clubs from all over the Wigan Borough during the past year. A staggering 108 nominations were received with 320 people attending the ceremony.

The 9th Annual Wigan Borough Sports Awards was sponsored by JJB Sports, as well as individual award sponsors Wigan Borough Sports Council, Wigan Athletic Football Club, Wigan Disability Sports Forum, Optimum Sport, Wish FM, Ferryman Blue Graphic Design, Greater Manchester and Wigan Police and the School Sports Partnership. Each of the winners received a personalised t-shirt from ADM Direct as a memento of the night.
