North West Street Games

2007 saw Wigan become one of the newest members of the ‘Street Games’ initiative. ‘Street Games’ is a national charity, established in 2006 to promote sport for young people living in the most disadvantaged communities with tried and tested ways of engaging young people who are currently outside sport. Up and down the country, ‘Street Games’ delivers sport and dance to young people where they want it, at times when they want it and in a style they want.

Through involvement with the street games initiative Wigan Sports development have now been successful in gaining £42,000 to deliver street games across the borough from 2007-2009. See “Get Active in Your Community” for details of a sports session in a community near you.

North West Street Games Festival 2007
More than 1000 young people from 13 inner city areas across the North West, many of whom in the past played little or no sport at all, attended the ‘2007 North West Street Games’ on 31st August at The City of Manchester Stadium. Great Britain and St Helens Rugby League star, Paul Sculthorpe opened the event and brought with him fellow team mates and the Rugby league challenge cup.

The 2007 Street Games also had the support of the then Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe, who said: “Street Games is a fantastic programme that offers young people from disadvantaged areas the chance to do more sport – such as football, athletics and basketball – and lead a more active lifestyle. The health benefits are obvious but Street Games does more than that. It also builds stronger communities and helps young people fulfil their potential through volunteering and coaching opportunities.”

This was Wigan’s 1st year as a participant and the borough brought the largest team on the day. There were over 120 young people and 20 coaches that attended the Festival. Wigan teams were successful in winning the handball, netball, cheerleading and athletics events. There was also a performance at the opening ceremony from Wigan’s dance group who had been professionally led by Victoria Thomas, WLCT and her support team.
