Game On Midnight Leagues
Wigan Sports Development have been
successful in attracting funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust,
through Game On and The Football Foundation, to run two parallel
Midnight Leagues in the Borough of Wigan. Originally based on the
Basketball Midnight Leagues in the US, Game On Midnight Leagues
encourage some of the most at risk young people in coalfield areas to
engage in a more positive activity in the evenings through organised
football leagues at community facilities.
Held from February through to April at Lowton High School and Robin Park
Arena the project is designed to provide a diversionary activity, free
of charge for young people aged 12-16 years on a Friday night in Wigan,
keeping potentially bored yet talented teenagers off the streets. Thus
far the Midnight Leagues have been successful in engaging over 150 young
people on a regular basis and have been supported by partners from Wigan
and Leigh Housing, Wigan Parks Activities and Regeneration Team, Youth
Workers and Police Community Support Officers. Wigan Athletic Football
Club contributed 150 tickets to their home Premier League fixture
against Derby County as a reward and recognition scheme for the young
people currently attending the Midnight Leagues.
The leagues will culminate with a Borough Finals night on 25th April
where the two leagues will come together to compete for the right to
represent Wigan at the Regional Finals held at Bolton Arena on 31st May.
