Greater Manchester Champions Challenge

Wigan Youngsters take Bronze at
Regional Youth Games
Wigan Borough’s young people brought home
an overall bronze after a huge team effort in the Greater Manchester
Champions Challenge Games.
Around 90 youngsters gave a valiant effort in the regional youth games
event to push Team Wigan into third place – three places higher than
last year’s result.
And while the team ranked in the top three overall, individual
competitors had a host of successes in their chosen sports.
Cycling proved to be a forte of Wigan Borough’s young people with
Georgia Cassidy taking a silver medal in the girls sprint cycling event.
Alexander Street also won a bronze in the boys sprint cycle competition.
Alistar Hill took second place in the boys endurance cycle event, with
Sophie Myers taking bronze in girls endurance cycle competition.
Over in a different section, Jacob Roberts was a bronze medal winner in
the virtual rowing event.
Young women from the borough homed bronze
medals in the girls football competition, proving that the beautiful
game isn’t just for boys.
Meanwhile the boys rugby team also won bronze in their event.
Helen Browne, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Sports Development
Officer, said: “A big congratulations must go to all the young people
for pushing us into the top three boroughs in Greater Manchester for
sporting achievement.
“This fantastic overall place is a
testament to the huge effort they put in at the games, with every team
and individual giving their all.
“The successes don’t end there as several young women from the netball
team have also been asked to attend county trials following their
performance at the Greater Manchester Champions Challenge.
“A huge thank you must also go to all the coaches and volunteers who
have worked with the young people over the past months.”
Each borough across Greater Manchester sent specially selected teams to
the event – formerly the Greater Manchester Youth Games – to compete in
sports from rowing to cycling, and football to girls rugby.
The aim was to use the competition as an opportunity to work with the
National Governing Bodies of sport to create high quality opportunities
for young people to compete. From this talent will be unearthed and
potential champion athletes will be found.
Wigan held several trials in preparation
for these games, where individual young people were identified as
potentially strong competitors. The chosen teams then trained weekly
since Christmas.
