Get Active, Get Volunteering

The ’Get Active, Get Volunteering’ Scheme was launched in January 2007 and has since recruited over 100 young volunteers to the scheme. As part of the scheme, Sports Development has delivered a number of Junior Sports Leaders Bolt on Days for year 11 students.

In October half term 21 young people from 12 high schools attended Hockey and Junior Football Organisers Courses at Robin Park Arena. In February half term 36 young people from 6 schools attended Rugby Leaders Award, Netball Organisers and Cheerleading courses at Robin Park and Howe Bridge.

The qualified young leaders have gone onto support Wigan Juniors Netball Club and ‘Get Active’ Holiday and Community programmes.

As part of the Youth Sport Trust’s Volunteer Programme, Wigan Sports Development in partnership with Wigan School Sports Partnership organised a Step into Sport Conference for young people aged 16-19. The aim of the day was for young people to leave the conference with a nationally recognised qualification in How to Coach Sports Effectively which was delivered by Sports Coach UK.

During the day the volunteers also participated in a Fundamentals Workshop and Volunteer Placement Workshop to enable them to undertake a voluntary placement in the community.
