Get Active in Your Community
“Get Active in Your Community” has been
developed to meet the dual aims of ‘Getting Wigan Active’ (WLCT) and
‘Tackling anti-social behaviour and issues of youth nuisance
particularly amongst young people’ (Community Safety Partnership). The
programme provides sports opportunities for young people in their local
community. The regular sessions include a variety of ‘Street Games’
including football, athletics, squash, handball and dance. Many of the
sessions are free of charge.
The Sports Development Team works in partnership with local agencies to
secure external funding to provide young people with regular sports
activities in their local community. The funding enables young people to
access a range of activities using high quality facilities for its
activities. The climax to each years activities is the chance for the
young people of Wigan to take part in the NW Street Games at Sport City,
Manchester in August.
In 2007, 12,422 young people participated in community sports activities
throughout the Borough.

Community Sessions
The eighteen month SPAA project employed three new coaches in November
2007 to work specifically within Super Output Areas (SOA’s) in Wigan.
Six community sports sessions have been already been established and a
seventh will commence in January 2008. Additional sessions are being
delivered to 6 ‘hard to reach’ groups including Alternative Curriculum
Providers and Hindley Youth Offending Institute.
Partnership working practices have been established between Sports
Development (WLCT) and the Anti Social Behaviour Unit (ASBU),
Environmental Services, Wigan Council to measure the impact of
activities – the first report has been produced for activities in Hag
Fold, Atherton (Nov 2007 – Feb 2008).
The format for future reporting has been
agreed, however more information is required as proof for the impact of
the activities. In addition to current impact assessment work; ASBU will
run at least 1 focus group with young people attending the sessions to
provide baseline data on young people’s physical, mental and emotional
well-being.
