Using the Library - Hints & Tips

Image: Young boy inflating a balloonOnce you’re a member, you can borrow items from the library; it’s a long list, so are you ready for it? As a member, you can borrow:

  • 15 books for three weeks;
  • 6 story CDs/tapes for three weeks;
  • 4 music CDs for two weeks (£1.00 each)
  • 4 DVDs for a week (£2.00 each)
  • 4 videos for a week (£1.75 each)
  • 4 PS2 games for a week (£2.00 each – only available at Wigan and Leigh libraries)

Keeping Books for Longer
Don’t worry if you are not able to read all the books you have borrowed within the three weeks. You can renew your books for another three weeks at a time, in any of the following ways:

If you want to renew your books online, you will need to get a pin number by calling into your local library. Once you have you pin number, you can access our computer system (called Talis Prism).

Fines and Reservations
Here’s the really good news! There are no fines for children and teenagers under 18 years old. The good news doesn’t end there either, as you can also reserve books free of charge.

Surfing the Internet
To surf the internet at your local library, you need to be a member of the library, and the Internet Permission section of the membership form must have been filled in (see more information about Internet Use). Once this has been done, you must remember to bring your membership card with you to the library whenever you want to use the internet.

If you’re 8 years old, or younger, you will need an adult with you to use the internet, but if you’re 9 years old, or older, you can surf the web on your own.

You will need to ask at the library counter to use the internet, and at busy times you may need to book.
