Information for Parents and Carers
If you’re not already a member of your local library, you’re missing out.
Our libraries offer everything from books to surfing the internet, and
from Playstation games to activities and events that’ll leave you
wanting more!
What do I need to know about internet access in libraries?
All our libraries offer filtered internet access. This means that we put
every possible step in place to ensure that your child will be
safeguarded while using the internet in any of our libraries.
We only allow children to use the internet if the Internet Permission
section of the membership form has been completed by either a parent or
a carer. Once this section has been completed, children 8 years old and
younger can use the internet if accompanied by an adult, whilst children
and young people aged 9 or older are able to use the internet on their
own.
In signing the Internet Permission section of the form, you agree that
your child will abide by the Internet use policy that operates in all
our libraries.
At busy times your child may need to book in advance to use the
internet, and at busy times use of the computers is limited to
half-an-hour.
What activities are free and what services attract a cost for children
and teenagers?
Wherever possible, we try to ensure that our services are free of
charge. All our libraries offer a range of regular events including
Under 5s Storytimes, as well as free loan
of books and story CDs/tapes, and free use of computers.
Charges do apply to some events, such as Saturday and holiday craft
sessions in in some of our libraries (contact your local branch for more
details), whilst there are
charges for the hire of DVDs, music CDs and PS2 games (Wigan and
Leigh libraries only). These costs are as follows:
- Music CDs can be hired for £1.00 each
for a two-week period;
- DVDs can be hired for £2.00 each for
a week
- Videos can be hired for £1.75 each
for a week
