What Is My School Entitled To?

All primary schools in the Wigan borough receive an allocation of loan credits (funded through the devolved budget), which we send out at the beginning of the new financial year. Schools wishing to increase their loan allocations can do so at a cost of £26 per loan.

For secondary schools, the cost per loan is the same, although the budget is delegated, so schools must either decide to buy into the service, or pay on a ‘loan-by-loan’ basis if they wish to use it.

We recognise that some schools would welcome an increase in their loan allocations, and so offer a ‘Loan Top-Up’ grant, that enables up to five schools per year to apply for an award of an additional ten loan credits at no extra cost. These grants are non-transferable, and have no alternative cash value. ‘Loan Top-Up’ grants should be applied for during the Autumn and Spring terms, and are awarded at the beginning of the new financial year (1st April).

What Are Loan Credits?

Loan Credits is the term we apply to the loan allocations that are awarded to each school. A single loan credit is exchangeable for a project loan, a museum loan or an advice visit (of three hours’ duration). The number of loan credits allocated to individual schools is decided based upon the amount of money that school contributes via the devolved budget.

Loan Credits are non-transferable, and have no alternative cash value. Please note that because the Schools’ Library Service operates on a budgetary basis, the loan allocation applies based on a financial year (1st April – 31st March), and not an academic year (September – July). Therefore, all Loan Credits must be used by 31st March of any given year.

What Happens If I Have A Complaint?

Wigan Schools’ Library Service always aims to provide a high quality, professional service, but sometimes things just don’t go right. If there is ever anything that you are unhappy about, please in the first instance speak to the person dealing with the issue and give them the opportunity to correct the issue. If the problem still persists, please ask to be transferred to the Head of Service.

Any complaints we receive will be treated seriously, and will be responded to promptly. If an immediate response is possible, we will ensure you receive an appropriate resolution to your concerns. For more complex complaints, we aim to respond within five working days, and, if appropriate, we will continue to keep you aware of developments until the complaint has been satisfactorily resolved.

Should you remain unsatisfied with our response, the Head of Service will be able to provide information for the procedure you should follow to make a formal complaint.
