Street
Dance 3D is one of those odd films that somehow manages to succeed in
spite of itself.
Honestly, SD3D (as I’ll call it) really doesn’t seem to have a lot going
for it.
First of all, there’s the cast (including Rachel McDowall,
Richard Winsor and Britain’s Got Talent has-beens George Sampson
and Diversity) who quite struggle to deliver; the level of acting
on display here ranging from passable to terrible.
Then there’s the plot, which doesn’t exactly scream out ‘look at me, I’m
original!’.
Basically, the story goes like this:
A dance crew loose their leader and their rehearsal space, which means
that all the pressure is on Carley [Nichola Burley] to get the
group organised and find them somewhere to practice.
After coming across ballet teacher Helena [Charlotte Rampling],
Carley agrees to teach Helana’s stuffy ballet students how to bust a
move street style in exchange for use of their practice space.
What follows (and trust me, there’s no big spoilers here), is more or
else what you’d expect; the two groups hate each other, then they love
each other, then stuff happens that shouldn’t and then (yeah, big shock
here), everything is alright in the end.
As for the dancing, which is probably the biggest selling point of SD3D,
well, there’s certainly better moves in other dance films. Then again,
it’s pretty enjoyable all the same.
And that pretty muc sums up Street Dance 3D on the whole, because,
despite all it’s flaws, this cheap and cheerful little film just works,
and somehow manages to be enjoyable.
Why? I’m not sure exactly, but the way the cast seem to be having the
time of their lives creates an enthusiasm that bursts through the screen
and leaves you feeling quite uplifted, which is surely worth the price
of a ticket..
