A
group of students from St John Rigby College recently completed a course
in basic sign language.
As part of the college’s Extended Studies programme, which also offers a
host of courses such as Driving Theory, Street Dance and even Learning
Japanese, the students took an in-depth look at deaf culture and how we
communicate with hearing-impaired people before learning key words and
phrases through practical exercises, games and videos.
Course tutor James Gretsy praised the young people’s dedication to the
programme.
He said:
“I am delighted that students have taken the opportunity to learn this
valuable skill. I hope some of our students will want to study sign
language at a higher level.”
One young student looking to fulfil James’ wishes is Tom Murphy. He
said:
“The course has been very interesting and worthwhile and I’ve now
decided that I’m going to go on and learn British Sign Language Level
1.”
St. John Rigby College hope to run the
basic sign language course again next year.
