Young people can help spend £300,000
Young people are once again being invited
to give their ideas on how £300,000 should be spend on youth projects in
Wigan Borough.
The Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF) is Government money aimed at improving
or providing things to do and places to go across Wigan and Leigh.
And young people aged 13 -19 are being asked to get in touch to give
their ideas on how the money can be spent.
Whether for an individual interest, a group of friends or a youth group,
applications can now be made for grants to fund more opportunities for
young people throughout the borough.
This is the second round of applications for the YOF and money has
already been spent on activities including music, arts and sports,
places to go and educational residential trips earlier this year.
Wigan Council’s YOF Co-ordinator Refat Mahmood said: ”This is a great
opportunity for young people to expand their interests and hobbies, make
new friends and also learn about the processes surrounding grants and
spending.”
All applications will be considered so long as they meet the following
criteria:
- Projects must provide equal opportunities for all young people aged
13 – 19.
- Projects must either encourage young people to be healthy, stay safe,
enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution or achieve economic well
being.
In this round of grants, further money is also available from the Youth
Capital Fund.
This money is again for anyone aged 13 –
19, but can be used for buying equipment or to undertake building work
to a community building or youth club.
Youth Opportunity Fund and Youth Capital Fund grants are administered
by Wigan Council and funded by the Department for Children, Schools and
Families for positive leisure activities and events and facilities to
improve the lives of young people. The ultimate decision about where the
money is spent is made by local young people, who can apply for grants
and also sit on a Youth Panel to decide who gets the cash.
Young people are invited to apply for either YOF or YCF in person,
although a youth worker or adult may help with the application.
Final decisions about where grants are awarded will be made by a team of
trained young people.
The deadline for applications for a grant is Friday October 30th.
Application forms and more information are available at
