X – Zones project launches in Leigh.
Young people’s weekends in Leigh are set to
become jam packed, as the X-Zones officially launch in the area on
Friday (October 2nd).
The X-Zones project aims to provide fun activities for young people when
they are most needed – on Friday and Saturday nights.
It is also designed to keep young people safe and off the streets.
The borough-wide project has already been launched in Wigan where
sessions are up and running.
The project will now be officially launched for young people in Leigh on
Friday from 4.30 – 9pm, in the Town Hall Square.
Young people will be able to have a go on the climbing wall, climb on
board the media bus and find out more about the X-Zones project.
Wigan Council Youth Worker Bev Wood said: “All young people are invited
to come and find out about the activities they’ll be able to get
involved in over the coming months.
“We’ve planning loads of different sessions – first aid courses, go-karting
football training and archery – so the X-Zones really should make a
difference to young people’s weekends.”
Run as a three-month pilot in early 2009, the X-Zones project provided
activities on Friday and Saturday evenings for young people in Wigan
Borough.
The activities were so popular and the pilot such a success, that the
project is kicking off again.
Wigan has now received a further £75,000 in Government funding to carry
the X-Zones forward until March 2010.
This time, the project has also received an extra £20,000 funding to
incorporate an alcohol awareness project.
Workers from Wigan Council’s Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Team will
now be heading out to X-Zones sessions to educate young people on the
effects and dangers of alcohol consumption
Headed by Wigan Council’s Youth Service, the X-Zones are delivered by a
host of agencies including the Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Team,
Community Safety teams, Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester
Fire and Rescue Service, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, and groups
from the voluntary sector.
Full information on the times and locations of activities will be posted
on
www.wlct.org/linconline when it becomes available.
