Wigan to hit youth games with a Klang, Bang, Wallop

A Wigan band are preparing for the biggest gig of their lives.

“The Klang” are fine tuning their set as they prepare to represent Wigan Borough at the ‘I love me’ Greater Manchester Youth Games ‘Battle of the Bands’ on Saturday (July 12th).

Having formed in Wigan last year, the band are eagerly anticipating performing on the big stage, confident that their music will go down well with the judges.

Bassist and vocalist Alex Winstanley said: “We believe it will be a fantastic experience, as it's such a big competition and we are confident in our own ability and material.”

The indie / rock ‘n’ roll outfit, who are influenced by such bands as The Beatles, Arctic Monkeys and Oasis, have played ten gigs around Wigan (starting in March 08) but nothing quite like this one.

Sam Longhurst (lead vocals), Alex Winstanley (bass and vocals), Lewis Whalley (rhythm/lead guitar and vocals) and Danny Calland (drums), who make up the Klang, will be competing against nine other bands from across the region on the day, to be named ‘I love me’ Greater Manchester Youth Games ‘Battle of the Bands’ Gold, Silver or Bronze medal winners.

The Klang will also be filmed by Sky TV as part of a national Best of the Bands competition at Jabez Clegg in Manchester in September.

Alex added: “We're really excited. We are optimistic and are growing in confidence.”

The ‘I love me’ Greater Manchester Youth Games will take place on Saturday at four sporting venues in Manchester city centre, bringing people from across the region together to compete in sport and arts. 'Team Wigan' will be taking over 250 youngsters to the event, to compete in volleyball, table tennis, athletics and other sports.

Adam Blezard, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Sports Development Officer, and ‘Team Wigan’ manager said: “All the squads are really looking forward to the games. They have been through the build up in their training programmes and are now raring to go for the main event. It will be great to see all the youngsters competing across such a diverse range of activities, in what is usually a fantastic atmosphere.”
