Youth Service on the Road
The Wigan Council Youth Service is going mobile with a new youth work van.
The vehicle provides a place for young people to meet, information on
local youth services and a place for young people to chat with youth
workers in confidence.
Children & Young People Services ran a competition asking young people
to design artwork for the van around the themes of ‘staying safe’ and
‘enjoying & achieving’.
A total of twenty-seven youngsters entered and the drawings of Laura
Hyland, Lauren Bleakley, Robert Farrimond and Alex Evans were chosen as
winners.
Local design company Spearfish helped the young people develop their art
during a day- long workshop before spraying the van with their designs.
Competition winner Lauren Bleakley said: “Working with a professional
design company was great fun. I really feel like I’ve achieved
something. I never thought my little drawing would end up being turned
into a huge piece of art on the side of a van.”
The four winners and runner-up Jane Daniels received certificates in
recognition of their work.
The van will also be used to transport youth workers and equipment
across the borough, allowing them to work with young people wherever
required.
Children & Young People’s Services Youth Worker Carmel Parr said: “We’d
like to thank everyone who entered the competition. The standard was
very high throughout and the winning designs look fantastic on the van.
The winners really enjoyed the workshop with Spearfish and they’ve
develop new skills as a result of it.
“We’d like to thank the Youth Arts Challenge, Wigan Leisure & Culture
Trust, Fix It, Wigan Council for Voluntary Youth Services and Spearfish
for making this a great project and for helping create a resource that
will assist youth workers across Wigan Borough.”
