Athletes warm up for youth games
The borough’s young athletes are to be put
through their paces in the run up to the 'I love me' Greater Manchester
Youth Games in July.
The annual games bring together young people from all ten local
authorities within Greater Manchester to compete in sport and to
showcase art.
This year’s games will be held in Manchester at Sportcity, Belle Vue
Sports Centre, the Manchester Aquatics Centre and Wright Robinson Sports
College on July 12th.
The Wigan Borough team will attend training camps on May 31st and June
1st at Robin Park Sports Complex and Leigh Sports Village respectively
ahead of the event. Both days will run from 10am to 2pm with the aim of
creating a “Team Wigan” atmosphere ahead of the games.
The training days will include motivational speeches, presentation of
the team kit and training for all of the events including tennis,
netball and hockey.
The days will be run by the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Sports
Development Team, who co-ordinate the Wigan Greater Manchester Youth
Games team.
Adam Blezard, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Sports Development
Officer, said: “The youth games are a great opportunity for young people
to represent their local area in a fun accessible event. The training
days will get the adrenaline going and help foster a good team spirit
ahead of the games.”
more.
Each year, 2500 young people take part in the youth games, which were
first held in 1988. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the event
organisers Greater Sport are this year inviting past participants and
twenty sports ambassadors, including high profile international
athletes.
The teams to represent Wigan Borough at the games have been selected
through interschool tournaments, club competitions and trial processes.
The majority of the squads have already been chosen but there are still
opportunities for young people aged 8 to 18 to get on the team. Anyone
interested should contact Adam Blezard on 01942 404997.
The Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Arts & Festivals team is looking for
local youth dance groups to take part in the arts element of the youth
games. Contact Vicky Fletcher, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Arts
Development Officer, on (01942) 486918 if your group is interested in
taking part.
