Water festival is a real splash
The event, run by Positive Futures Outdoor Education Team, was held on Friday (July 22nd) and Saturday (July 23rd), giving adults and young people the chance to take part in an array of water-based activities. The first day of the event saw several youth groups from across the borough come together for a day of kayaking, dragon boating, windsurfing, raft building and sailing. Young people were also given the Scotsman’s' Safari, a guided tour teaching children about the history and nature of the Flash. Participant Laura Rigby, 15, from Poolstock said: "I have enjoyed having the opportunity to try something new. These activities are very adaptable. There is a lot more choice in what you can do and once you've done one of these sports you can easily pick up others, as they are quite similar." On Saturday, the event was thrown open to the public with parents and their children enjoying a great family day out. Over 300 people took part in the festival over the two days, with around 200 of those taking to the water for activities. Both days were rounded off with a celebratory barbecue. Positive Futures Outdoor Education Team Manager Eric Bradbury hailed the water festival as a huge success. "The Water Festival was a lot of fun," said Eric. "Not only did a large number of people enjoy two great days out, but the event also acted as a showcase for the array of outdoor opportunities offered by the Positive Futures Outdoor Education Team. "It is sometimes said there is nothing for young people to do these days. However, we put on a wide range of outdoor activities throughout the year, keeping young people entertained, educating them and, most importantly of all, helping them stay fit and healthy." In addition to the water-based activities on offer this weekend, Positive Futures Outdoor Education Team delivers sessions in mountain climbing, abseiling, orienteering, archery and other land-based activities.
