Girls draw on graffiti to boost
confidence
Girls in Hag Fold, Atherton, have gone graffiti mad… by taking part in a
seven-week art project at the Dorset Road Community Centre.
The local girls produced individual pieces of stencil art and one large
group print, during a project designed to improve their self–esteem,
confidence, assertiveness and sexual health awareness.
The girls really showed their true colours! Using photographs as the
basis for their work, they created eye-catching pieces of art by
layering spray paint on to stencils.
Sandra Bell, who took part in the project said: “I really enjoyed the
project. I didn’t think I’d be able to do it at first but I was really
pleased with how my picture turned out.”
The group meets every Tuesday afternoon between 1pm and 3pm. A free
nursery is available at the community centre, allowing young mothers to
take their children along.
The group, which is open to all young women on the Hag Fold estate, is
run in partnership between Brook and Children & Young People Services
(CYPS).
Brook is the sexual health advisory service for young people (aged 16 to
25). It has centres across the country, including Wigan and Leigh.
Ann-Marie Yates from Brook said: “The girls have shown fantastic
commitment to the project and they have produced some great pictures.
This group gives young women living in the local area a chance to meet
others their age, and it is an opportunity for them to take part in an
exciting range of activities that can help improve their self-esteem.”
Any young women in the Hag Fold / Atherton area interested in going
along to the girls group should contact Anne-Marie at Wigan Brook on
(01942) 760000 or Janet Pendlebury at Wigan CYPS on (01942) 404885.
