Time to vote for Members of Youth
Parliament
*Photocall –
Photographers and reporters are invited to Wigan Town Hall on Wednesday
February 24th from 6 – 8.45pm for the UK Youth Parliament elections for
Wigan Borough.
It’s time again for the young people of Wigan Borough to vote for who
they want to represent them locally, regionally and even nationally.
The Wigan Youth Parliament elections are now in full swing and young
people can vote for the candidates they want as their Members of Youth
Parliament (MYPs).
Voting closes on February 21st at 5pm, and the two winning candidates
will be announced at a special election evening at Wigan Town Hall on
Wednesday February 24th.
Angela Wood, Wigan Council youth worker who runs the borough’s Youth
Council, said: “The Wigan Youth Council group are there to deal with the
issues that matter to young people in the borough, but it is the MYPs
who can push these issues at a regional or even national level.
“That’s why it’s so important that young people get voting for who they
want to represent them and their views.
“We want all young people in Wigan Borough to get involved and get their
opinions heard.”
Wigan’s MYPs will have the chance to bring the issues that matter to
young people in Wigan Borough to local and national government, as well
as organising campaigns, projects and events.
They will meet with senior decision makers both locally and nationally
to represent the views of local young people.
Wigan Borough’s outgoing MYPs, Devan Lucas and Mark Talbot, played their
part in making history this year, as the UK Youth Parliament were given
the chance to debate in the House of Commons for the very first time.
This year nine young hopefuls are hoping for your vote.
Jason Halliwell, Natasha Moss, Jilly McKiernan, Adam Jones, Ahmed
Younis, Hollie McChrystal, Callum Welsh, Megan Jones and Nikitta
Richardson are all hoping to be elected.
Any young person in Wigan Borough aged 11 – 18 can vote either by text
or online.
Only one vote can be cast per person and further votes will be
disqualified.
Videos of each candidate explaining why you should vote for them can be
viewed at
www.wlct.org/linconline, where votes can also be cast.
Alternatively, young people can text the initials of their chosen
candidate to 07624 810462 with their own name, date of birth, door
number and postcode.
This information must be included in the text or your vote will not
count. The information you text will only be used for this purpose.
Texts will cost your standard text message rate and you will get a reply
by text.
Voting ends 21st Feb at 5pm. Any texts received after this time will not
be counted but may still be charged.
