Young People Bring Year Round Flowers to their Garden

HOPE School Youth Club have unveiled their work that brings a touch of summer to the school’s garden.

Young people at the school have spent weeks designing and creating a series of mosaics with local community artist Mark Mennell.

On Tuesday, the mosaics including large, colourful flowers, butterflies and insects were officially unveiled by Mayor of Wigan Cllr Rona Winkworth in the central garden area at Hope School in Highfield Grange Avenue, Wigan.

Cllr Winkworth, who is also vice chair of governors at the school, said: “The garden is looking really colourful and great now and the mosaics are very tactile for the kids.”

Hope Youth Club is a group for young people with special educational needs run through a partnership between Hope School and Wigan Council’s youth service.

The group received cash for the project through the Youth Opportunity Fund - Government funding passed down to local authorities to boost activities and facilities in youth projects.

The Hope youngsters worked with community artist Mark Mennell, first discussing the theme of gardens.
After their drawings and ideas were translated into designs, the young people worked alongside Mark to create the mosaics.

Mark said: “I have done a lot of work in schools before but this project has been wonderful. The kids have been great, so enthusiastic and creative.”

Steve Davies, one of the youth leaders of the Hope group, said: “We wanted to celebrate the mosaics officially to mark the achievement of the young people.
“The group is really popular and even without achievements such as these mosaics, the youth club is a great way to help the young people socialize outside of school.”

ENDS.
