2012 Olympics Inspires young people in
Wigan Borough.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s 'What's
Your Game' Calendar has been granted the Inspire Mark - the badge of the
London 2012 Inspire Programme.
The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional
projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games.
The 'What’s Your Game' project will focus on a different sport each
month throughout 2010, using different events to inspire and enthuse
young people to compete in the sports.
The sports project is the third in the North West and the first in Great
Manchester to be given the prestigious award.
Seb Coe, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic
Games Chair, said: “The ‘What’s Your Game’ Calendar is encouraging young
people to fulfil their potential. I am proud that with the help of
partners such as Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust we are delivering our
vision to use the power of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to
boost participation in Wigan Borough.”
'What’s Your Game' launched at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday with the
first event in the project’s calendar, the Wigan Development Swimming
Gala.
The Wigan Development Gala has been organised by Atherton and Leigh
Amateur Swimming Club and supported by the other five clubs in the Wigan
Swimming Development Group.
As their first organised gala event, it attracted around 70 competitors
from the borough's swimming clubs.
Ashton Central Swimming Club, Hindley Amateur Swimming Club, Wigan
Swimming Club, Howe Bridge Swimming Club, Atherton and Leigh Swimming
Club and Tyldesley Swimming and Water Polo Club took part.
The event was designed for keen young swimmers who had not yet taken
part in swimming galas or competitions. It was hoped the event would
give them a taste for competitive sport and the confidence to seek
further successes.
Anne Winstanley, team manager of Atherton and Leigh Amateur swimming
club who helped organise the event, said: “We thought it would be a
great idea to stage an event for the developing swimmers, to give them
some practice of taking part in events and to build up their confidence.
“The first step is often the biggest step, so events like this should
help them on the road to further competitions.”
Lizzie Hendley, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust club sports development
manager, said: ”It has been really great to see so many young people
participating and so many volunteers and Active Life staff giving up
their Sunday. Thank you to all those involved.
“As the first event in the What’s Your Game calendar it has been a great
success and a positive sign of things to come.”
