On 14th May the Wigan Music Collective held an event showcasing three local bands: the Ankerkites, Old Tape Ghost, and E.C.D. The latter of these bands, E.C.D, has gradually gained musical acclaim throughout the North West, becoming known for their unique sound of Killers-inspired music and Bowie-influenced vocals. Tonight, E.C.D.'s reputation has resulted in an admirable attendance at the Tudor House Hotel.

More often than not a band is judged solely upon its appearance. To do so with E.C.D would be a sore mistake. At a glance, E.C.D appear to be little more than a diverse group of social misfits: the singer of the band, Tom Jones, is stood at the foreground of the stage donning a classic woolen-pullover; to the right is Alex Preston, E.C.D's synth-player, who leans on the keyboards with a flamboyant flair; behind the drums sits AJ, whose plain façade is somewhat deceiving; to the left is the bassist, Josh Hindle, whose long-hair and skinny-jeans scream glam-rock; and finally, in the centre of the stage stands Mike Bishop, a guitarist who – this evening, at least – appears to have had a little too much to drink.

All of these qualities seem to clash; yet, when the lights dim and the band starts to play, these contrary characteristics unite into an admirable – and arguably refreshing – force.

The band opens with Gotta Find A Way, a song that easily draws in the crowd, going on to perform the bluesy Drugged Up, the ominous Leaving Sanity, and the up-tempo That Someone. The introductory synth of Just to be There seduces the crowd onto their feet, resulting in a flurry of dancing; next, the Ankerkites unexpectedly join E.C.D on the stage and the bands collectively perform an impromptu rendition of Chuck Berry's 1958 riff-fuelled rock 'n' roll classic, Johnny B. Goode.

Yet, the crowd still hasn't had enough. E.C.D submit to the chants of ‘encore’ with one final song, playing The Killers' Smile Like You Mean It, waving goodbye to a spectacular evening and a stunning performance.
