Wigan Pier Theatre Company
Community Theatre Projects
Wigan Pier Community Theatre: Wigan
The Community Theatre Company (CTC) was set up in March 2003 and runs an
open access policy for anyone age 16 and over. As with the Youth
Theatres, the CTC has a ‘no audition’, no cost policy and actively
encourages people to participate no matter their level of experience.
Professional theatre workers work together with the CTC to produce at
least one new full-length play a year and offer the chance for members
to take part in a range of other performances. The Company meets weekly
and undertakes a range of activities including drama games and skills,
voice, text and improvisations as well as performance rehearsals. Most
of the productions are written specifically for the Company.
Productions to date:
“Segs, Pies & Rag ‘n’ Bone” – Feb 2004
“Way to Go” – March 2005
“The Cagic Mup” – Arts for All Day – July 2005

CreativeLEIGH
“CreativeLEIGH” – a partnership project between Leigh Sports Village and
Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund
As part of the Your Heritage programme, LSV Co has been awarded a grant
of £43,800 to commission Wigan Pier Theatre Company to deliver a series
of workshops building up to performances during 2009. Through drama
provision and research this major community project will explore the
History of Leigh and its future regeneration with Leigh Sports Village.
This will be done by creating a community theatre group in Leigh – Wigan
Pier Theatre Company will develop their work with the Higher Folds
estate, local schools and Leigh Sports Village to create a “theatrical
tour” of the Sports Village.
Running between September 2009 and October 2010, the project will
involve:
- Intergenerational research time
between young people and community groups with aural history
- Youth and community theatre workshops
led by professional actors
- Site specific & public performances:
community theatre element combined with professional actors giving
“guided tours”.
- Some sort of permanent exhibition as
a result of the project.
The youth & community theatre groups involved in creating the
celebratory performance for October 2010 are:
Higher Folds Youth Theatre aged 8 – 11’s – Mondays 4.30 – 5.30pm
Higher Folds Youth Theatre aged 12 – 15’s – Mondays 5.30 – 7.00pm
Higher Folds Adult Community Theatre – Wednesdays 7.30 – 9.00pm
(All taking place at Higher Folds Community Centre during term-time)
Lowton Youth Theatre aged 12 – 15’s – Mondays 7.30 – 9.00pm (at Lowton
High School)
Alongside the drama element to the project, primary schools from the
Area 3 Cluster will be engaged in creating artwork for the project. This
side to the work will focus on the creation of a permanent display for
Leigh Sports Village. The findings from the research and the script will
be interpreted by a visual artist who will engage young people in
workshops after school.
This project will bring together all generations of the community. There
is a strong partnership element to the project with LSV Trust, Wigan
Leisure & Culture Trust and Wigan Council all being supportive of the
idea.
